The problem
Does this sound familiar?
For founders, SMB owners, and the C-suite who know something is wrong, even when the technical cause is unclear.
Production keeps breaking. Nobody can explain why.
Reliability engineering, SRE consulting, and incident leadership to diagnose failures, stabilize service, and reduce repeat incidents.
Cloud costs are out of control.
Cloud cost optimization and FinOps advisory to find waste and weigh savings against reliability and delivery.
A critical project is stuck. The platform will not scale.
Infrastructure consulting, platform engineering, architecture, and modernization to find blockers and build a workable delivery plan.
Your vendor says everything is fine. It clearly is not.
An independent technical second opinion on vendor claims, proposals, and expensive decisions.
The board, investors, or auditors need answers.
Technical due diligence, risk reporting, and security or compliance remediation planning you can explain to decision-makers.
Your team is capable. It needs senior direction.
Fractional leadership means part-time, contract-based technical leadership. Get CTO, CIO, or COO support and startup advisory that connects technical strategy with business priorities.
What NullorNaN does
Senior judgment. Hands-on work. Clear tradeoffs.
We are an intentionally small, principal-led practice. We help diagnose the situation, set priorities, and do the work, from a second opinion to a complex technical engagement.
- Describe the symptoms. Tell us what is affected and what is at stake.
- Agree on the next steps. Confirm fit, availability, scope, and cost before work starts.
- Move forward with a clear plan. Get hands-on help and decisions you can explain to your team or board.
Pricing
Clear options for the work ahead.
You do not need to pick a package before contacting us. These are starting points; we will help scope the right work. All rates are in USD.
Targeted engineering and infrastructure engagements may be available for a limited time, subject to scope and capacity. Larger projects, retainers, and fractional leadership are scoped separately. Ask about fit and availability →

Outcomes that move the business forward
Selected outcomes from separate engagements and operating work. Each reflects its own scope; fundraising and transaction outcomes are shared efforts.
Direction, cost, and scale
How it was delivered
- Situation
- Growing clients needed a common technology direction across teams.
- Constraint
- The approach had to work from seed stage through 200-person operations.
- What changed
- Aligned 12+ engineering teams on strategy, roadmaps, and delivery automation.
- Measured result
- 300% increase in scalability.
How it was delivered
- Situation
- AI infrastructure spend was rising without clear allocation controls.
- Constraint
- Cost reduction could not compromise priority model capacity.
- What changed
- Introduced governance, model prioritization, and resource allocation.
- Measured result
- Helped reduce AI/infrastructure spend from $20M to $12M in 30 days.
How it was delivered
- Situation
- The practice needed a reliable internal view of cost and cash flow.
- Constraint
- Financial data access had to remain read-only and controlled.
- What changed
- Built cost controls and forecasting with read-only financial data.
- Measured result
- 2% forecast variance.
How it was delivered
- Situation
- A pre-equity rideshare startup needed a viable technical and financial plan.
- Constraint
- The roadmap target was seven business days.
- What changed
- Drafted milestone costs, early build-out steps, and 2-3 year priorities.
- Measured result
- Production-ready platform architecture and buildout plan delivered in two business days.
Reliability and execution
How it was delivered
- Situation
- A growth-stage security platform needed lower cloud operating cost.
- Constraint
- The platform had to remain stable while the container strategy changed.
- What changed
- Reviewed and optimized the Amazon EKS container strategy.
- Measured result
- 35-40% lower cloud operating cost.
How it was delivered
- Situation
- A critical backup failure required a fast diagnosis.
- Constraint
- Two prior SRE consultants had already attempted the fix over multiple engagements.
- What changed
- Traced the failure path and identified the corrective fix.
- Measured result
- Critical backup issue isolated and fix identified within 15 minutes.
How it was delivered
- Situation
- High-visibility events needed lower-latency, more resilient operations.
- Constraint
- The platform had to remain fault-tolerant during large-scale activity.
- What changed
- Built low-latency infrastructure and clear operating procedures.
- Measured result
- 90% fewer operational incidents.
How it was delivered
- Situation
- A regulated environment required remediation during a FedRAMP/CCRI scale-out.
- Constraint
- The program covered a 100+ node environment with compliance requirements.
- What changed
- Resolved security and compliance findings through a structured program.
- Measured result
- 300+ findings resolved across 100+ nodes.

FAQ
Working together
What we do, who delivers it, and how to get started.
Do I need to know which technical service I need?
No. Tell us what is happening, what it means for the business, and any deadline. NullorNaN helps determine whether the next step is a focused diagnosis, a second opinion, hands-on work, or ongoing leadership.
What does an urgent systems engineering or infrastructure engagement look like?
Once availability and scope are agreed, we establish business impact, symptoms, recent changes, and who owns the response. Then we investigate, explain stabilization options, and agree next steps with your team. Contacting us does not activate immediate incident response or 24/7 coverage; our earliest normal start is 2–4 business days.
Do I work directly with NullorNaN's CTO?
Yes. Our CTO personally delivers all engagement work. Support staff may handle coordination and first contact, but there is no consulting bench.
What is fractional leadership?
Fractional leadership is part-time, contract-based technical leadership. A fractional CTO guides architecture and technical delivery; a fractional CIO guides internal systems, vendors, and technology investment; a fractional COO guides technology operations and execution. Responsibilities, decision authority, and cadence are agreed before work begins. Matt personally delivers the work.
What is Principal SRE?
Principal SRE is senior, hands-on reliability leadership for systems that need to scale, stabilize, or change safely. It combines architecture, incident response, automation, cloud and platform operations, and the judgment to turn unclear technical risk into an executable plan.
What happens in a Technical Advisory session?
A Technical Advisory session is a 30-minute guided conversation to clarify a technical issue, walk through options, or plan the next step. It is guidance and planning, not hands-on implementation or deep technical delivery.
Where are you based and who do you serve?
NullorNaN Systems, LLC is a U.S.-registered, U.S.-staffed consulting firm. We serve clients globally, with technical leadership delivered from the U.S. Eastern Time zone.
Who is NullorNaN's CTO?
Matt McGowan. See his background on LinkedIn.

- Technical Projects: From $1,250. Scope and timeline are set in a written agreement.
Is there a minimum commitment?
Technical Advisory is a single 30-minute session. Standard hourly work has a 3-hour minimum. Minimum commitment for a limited-time targeted engagement is confirmed with its scope. Retainers begin with a 3-month commitment. Discounted annual prepayment is available.
How fast can we start?
The soonest we can start is 2-4 business days if both sides move quickly. Start with the contact form or email; we generally reply within 1 business day. Once we agree on scope, ongoing work begins after the written agreement is signed and invoice payment clears.
